About
With a tormented colossus in the garden, this is a Renaissance villa and gardens.
The splendor and puzzle of renaissance gardens magnified by centuries of neglect is apparent in the case of Villa Demidoff. A commission from Francesco I de’ Medici, Villa Demidoff and its neighbour Villa di Pratolino required 12 years to finish. The eventual outcome was a fantastic close to labyrinthine natural caves, lakes and impressive sculptures. Of these, the 16th century "Appennine Colossus" stands out as the primary highlight of the vista, perched atop a grotto in an air of despair at his destiny.
