It is situated on the border between Tuscany and Umbria and encircles the eponymous valley with the eerie ruins of Pierle Castle. During the 10th century, the castle was first mentioned and owned by the Marquis of Monte Santa Maria Tiberina. The castle is located at a strategic intersection of several roads. It played a crucial role in the struggle between the Tuscan city of Cortona and the Umbrian city of Perugia during the 13th and 14th centuries.
