About
A prohibited island with a sinister past is located less than half a mile from Venice.
Poveglia, originally built and used as a Venetian plague quarantine station from 1793-1814, is now being investigated to determine if there are any mass graves on the nearby islands of Lazaretto Nuovo and Lazzaretto Vecchio. So many people are thought to have died on Poveglia that some believe half the soil is composed of human remains.
