About
There are early surgical instruments and rare copies of canonical texts hidden behind the marble facade.
The Scuola Grande di San Marco in Venice is one of the six “great schools” of the city. Located in the Castello district's Campo di San Giovanni e Paolo, its mighty marble facade rises high and can be seen from a distance. To truly marvel at the building, it must be observed within; converted into a hospital, its first floor houses an exquisite gallery which also hosts a medical museum. On display are tools used for gynecology, trepanation, amputation and other procedures up until the 19th century or earlier. Fortunately for us, many of these techniques have since been replaced with more modern methods.
