About
On this street where the Neapolitan nativity scene comes to life every day, it's like Christmas every day.
The bustling streets of Naples often converge in Via San Gregorio Armeno, more commonly known as Via dei Presepi. Here, one can find shops devoted to the classic Neapolitan presepio; these handcrafted items allude to Christianity's nativity scenes that have been a tradition since Saint Francis of Assisi created the first depiction of Jesus in a manger in 1223. By the 16th century, it had become quite common for households and churches to feature such scenes before Christmas. The 17th and 18th centuries then saw increased popularity of nativity scenes; many of their resulting pieces were works of art found in local chapels and palaces throughout the city and its surroundings.
