About

An underground paleo-Christian burial site that contains the remains of several cemeteries and basilicas.

The Catacombs of San Gennaro, situated in the north of Naples on the slope leading up to Capodimonte, are highly esteemed among Italy's numerous paleo-Christian ruins. Now easily identifiable by the impressive church of Madre del Buon Consiglio, they were initially three cemeteries - dedicated to San Gaudioso, San Severo and San Januarius - that have grown together to form one complex. The passageways of these Catacombs stand out for being relatively broad and split across two levels; the lower is believed to be from as early as the 3rd or 4th century and could potentially mark a former pre-Christian graveyard handed over to a new faith.
