About
As a wartime bomb shelter and dumping ground for vintage cars, the tunnel was originally built as a secret royal escape route.
Hidden about 100 feet beneath the streets of Naples is an expansive tunnel containing old cars and wartime artifacts. Constructed in 1853, it was conceived by King Ferdinand II of Bourbon as an escape route should riots or uprisings occur. The tunnel would provide a secret connection from the Royal Palace to the military barracks and keep his family safe in case of trouble. Remarkably, this is the same dynasty that gave its name to New Orleans' notable Bourbon Street.
