About
In this centuries-old church built in a canal city, the undercroft is beautifully flooded.
Constructed in the 15th century with their characteristic combination of Gothic and Renaissance styles, San Zaccaria church is an impressively ornate construction that is a true representation of the time it was built. Its beginnings can be dated back to the 9th century, when it was founded on the orders of one of Venice’s doges at that time. Since then, even though the current décor is much more up-to-date than before, its crypt still holds the remains of those who initially commissioned it. The burial chamber is graced by columns and vaulted ceilings, typical of its era yet partially submerged by water from the surrounding canals. However, rather than marring its funereal beauty, this watery reflection adds a further solemn charm to it by further setting off each tomb and doubling the length of its columns.
