About
Under the facades of other buildings, the oldest church in Mantua remained buried for centuries.
Rotonda di San Lorenzo is located in the main square of Mantua, Northern Italy, and was built during the reign of the powerful Canossa family during the late 11th century. Its central plan and Byzantine-style frescoes make it a fine example of Romanesque architecture. According to the Lombard tradition, the church is primarily made of bricks, but includes marble details as well. In honor of St. Lawrence, the church was dedicated after construction.
