About

A Roman church built over Nero's grave contains a treasure trove of Renaissance funerary art.

Often overlooked by visitors, Santa Maria del Popolo is a remarkable representation of works from the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Its aisles are filled with funerary art, and tombstones lay scattered in its floors, although few remain legible from the passing of time. Dating back to 1099, the church became a popular burial site for the papal aristocracy, clergy and literati throughout the Renaissance. It proudly displays a variety of tombs and grave monuments from 15th to 19th centuries.
