About

A 13th century town is still visible when the water recedes from this Tuscan lake.

Although it isn't the fabled lost city of Atlantis, Fabbriche di Careggine is very much a reality. It is still largely intact beneath the surface of Tuscany's Lago di Vagli. When the lake's waters are drained for maintenance, one can get a glimpse of this medieval village that had been submerged in 1953 when a dam was built. Founded during the 1200s by blacksmiths in need of sustenance, this small town managed to remain inhabited until the 20th century, housing over 30 buildings and nearly 150 people who mostly lived off old farming techniques as their source of livelihood.
