About
A massive Neptune's bomb-damaged ruins.
Il Gigante, formerly a towering figure at the end of a popular sunbathing beach in Monterosso del Mare, Italy, was reduced to an armless ruin by Allied bombs and rough seas. Il Gigante was originally built from concrete in 1910 to decorate the seaward edge of Villa Pastine, and became a symbol of the town. In 1937, Minerbi was forced into hiding because he was Jewish, and the scenes on the doors he had designed were based on the Edict of Constantine, which called for religious toleration. After the war, he completed and installed the doors.
