About
Nestled between two other gems of the Upper Town – Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica and Palazzo della Ragione – stands Sant’Alessandro Cathedral, a striking display of outstanding beauty.
Located in Piazza Duomo, in the heart of the Old Town, this sacred area has a long history dating back to the V Century B.C., as evidenced by its underground layers. The cathedral is home to many treasures, including paintings by renowned artists such as Giovan Battista Moroni, Andrea Previtali, and Giambattista Tiepolo. Other notable works include an altarpiece by Carlo Ceresa and wood and marble inlays by Andrea Fantoni. However, the most precious item on display is the tiara belonging to Pope John XXIII (now Saint John XXIII), who was born in Sotto il Monte near Bergamo. This sparkling gold headgear is adorned with pearls, rubies, diamonds, and emeralds, crafted by goldsmith Attilio Nani. Inside the high altar lies the remains of Saint Alessandro Martyr, Bergamo’s patron saint.
