About
St. Antoninus' mummified relic.
The Dominican Church of San Marco in Florence is home to the mummified relic of St. Antoninus, who has laid in a glass coffin for over 550 years. He was clothed in his ornate archbishop’s garb and despite the Pope’s threat of excommunication, Antoninus maintained his lifestyle as a monk while alive; only owning simple furniture and a mule. His body was left unembalmed for 8 days before being interred in the Chapel of St. Antoninus in 1459 where it remains today. While some restoration work has likely been done to keep him looking fresh, Antoninus appears just as serene and virtuous as when he passed away.
