As a place of refuge for sinners seeking absolution, this domed temple was built in a hidden cave mouth.
Just inside the tall mouth of an Italian mountain cave sits the striking neo-classical silhouette of the Temple of Valadier. While it may appear as if the temple is looking for refuge in the cave, in reality it is the local population who have found shelter within its walls for centuries. Remains from at least as far back as the 10th century are evidence of their presence, often fleeing from invading enemy tribes. The ornate design was commissioned by the reigning pope in 1828, featuring a domed roof encasing an octagonal silo - a symbolic reminder of Jesus' resurrection after three days. Just outside lies a crude hermitage, adding extra protection to this remarkable place.
