About
A future pope previously resided in this famous rock hermitage.
A spectacular rock hermitage overlooking the valley of Santo Spirito, San Bartolomeo in Legio, stands on a cliff over the Majella's peaks. In the Middle Ages, hermits dug an entrance through the rock and carved the steps that lead to a small chapel that still preserves traces of medieval frescoes, including one of Jesus Christ and one of the Virgin, which is located above the door. Small rooms served as dormitories for the pious at the back.
