Must See Places

About

A cave with exceptional acoustics and a shady past in Italy.

Known for its teardrop shape (Orecchio di Dionisio in Italian), the Ear of Dionysus cavern has outstanding acoustics that amplify even the quietest sounds, which can be heard via an opening at the top, about 72 feet above the ground. Conrad Malt-Brun observed in 1829 that tearing paper makes a sound similar to knocking a heavy stick against a stone.
