Under its marble floors, the Basilica di San Clemente holds layers of surprises that make it stand out in a city filled with places of worship. Under this “modern” 1120 church is the original basilica, which dates back to 392 AD. The original, known as the “first basilica,” was rediscovered during excavations in the 1860s. The wall paintings within the first basilica are the world's second largest collection in early Medieval art.
