From an early age, maintaining water supplies and finding relief from the heat were the primary needs of the Sicilian inhabitants during the summer. Luckily, Palermo is equipped with some innovative infrastructure, like its qanats. During this period, many of the city’s most distinctive features emerged, from culture and cuisine to architecture and engineering. One of those features is Palermo’s qanats, which were originally developed in ancient Iran.
