About
Assisi's cathedral is devoted to San Rufino, despite the fact that every structure honors Saint Francis. In Amaziah, Turkey, Rufino served as the bishop.
Three naves make up the cathedral. Since architect Galeazzo Alessi completely renovated the interior in 1571, the style is no longer what it was. An old baptismal font can be found at the start of the right-hand nave. According to legend, this is where Saint Francis and Saint Clare were baptized, and possibly even Emperor Frederick II in 1197.
Inside, there are ten altars with prophetic statues alternating with two 1800s-era statues of Francis and Clare on the other side. The chapel of Blessed Sacrament is baroque and located on the right side. Its apse houses a large 19th-century organ and a magnificent wood choir that dates back to 1520.
The most haunting location is unquestionably the Crypt, which was built during Bishop Ugone's renovations and is located where the presbytery of the old Ancient Basilica once stood. This church still retains its 11th-century decorations, which include a bishop's chair and a third-century Roman sarcophagus near the high altar that contained Rufinus' relics.
