About

A number of oddities and secrets are hidden within the best preserved Paleochristian basilica in Rome.

The Basilica of Santa Sabina, situated on the Aventine Hill in Rome, is renowned as one of the best preserved examples of Paleochristian architecture in the city. Offering a visual insight into what other churches and basilicas from its era may have looked like, including St. Peter’s first basilica, it is worth noting that few visitors realize there are a number of hidden features to be discovered. It was built during Celestine I's (422-432) and Sixtus III's (432-440) papal reigns by one Peter of Illyria as indicated by the impressive golden mosaic inscription situated opposite the apse. This is now the only surviving mosaic decoration from this era, with many others lost from between the arcades and clerestory.
