About
These ancient Roman supporting arches exhibit Hellenistic inventiveness despite having an unclear use.
Two massive hemicycle-shaped travertine arches support the walls of Anagni dating back to the 3rd century B.C. The arcazzi di Piscina are two massive arches dating back to the end of the 3rd century B.C. Through the application of the arch technique and the use of heavy stones in opus quadratum, the structure is able to distribute the weight evenly. Although the purpose of the structure is not known, it’s believed that it was either a dam or a defensive structure that protected the city.
