About

On the grounds of a Venetian doge's playground, there is a nine-layer maze.

According to local legend, the complex hedge maze at Villa Pisani was so difficult that Napoleon, who lived in the villa at one time, became lost in it. It is said that Hitler and Mussolini were too scared to enter it. Designed by Girolamo Frigimelica for Doge Alvise Pisani in 1720, the circular path of nine concentric patterns boasts numerous dead ends encircling a tall tower at its center. The tall hedges obstruct a complete view once you have entered, adding to the difficulty of this classic medieval design. From the tower's summit stands a statue of Minerva, goddess of wisdom and arts, atop a double spiral staircase - which must be navigated properly to reveal the secrets held by the hedge maze.
