About
In Bologna, more than 100 towers were constructed throughout the Middle Ages, but only 22 remain now.
For reasons that are yet unclear, a staggering number of towers were constructed all throughout Bologna during the 12th and 13th centuries, creating an urban skyline that is practically identical to that of contemporary Manhattan. There are now only 22 left. Rich families using the towers as a show of wealth and prestige as well as for defensive purposes to guard their land are two theories for the popularity of vertical building. A few of the smaller structures were constructed as houses.
