During the 10th century, the castle was first mentioned and owned by the Marquis of Monte Santa Maria Tiberina. The castle is located at a strategic intersection of several roads. It played a crucial role in the struggle between the Tuscan city of Cortona and the Umbrian city of Perugia during the 13th and 14th centuries.
