The Ospedale Psichiatrico di Volterra is a spectral sight, evoking images out of a horror movie. Located near the center of Volterra, this psychiatric institution was shuttered due to reports of cruel treatment of its patients. An unknown individual left an impressive work etched into the plaster walls as a remnant of his captivity. Four structures make up the property, with the most recently constructed building facing neglect and decay. The windows have been smashed and the the exterior covered in spray-painted graffiti. Inside are relics from 1978 when it was vacated - wheelchairs, a telephone booth, and sun beds - adding to its unearthly atmosphere.
