About
Lake Lugano, situated between Lakes Maggiore and Como, covers an area of 19 square miles.
The middle section spanning 12 square miles lies within the Ticino canton in Switzerland, while the northeastern and southwestern ends extend into Italy's Lombardy regione. At an elevation of 889 feet (271 m) above sea level, Lake Lugano is surrounded by the outer spurs of the Alps that divide the Ticino River basin from that of the Adda. Its shape is irregular, with a western arm nearly separated from the main body of water.
