About

A colorful Tuscan garden is filled with giant mosaic sculptures of the figures on Tarot cards.

In 1978, French sculptor and filmmaker Niki de Saint Phalle began a 20-year project of creating 22 large-scale sculptures inspired by Tarot cards. Eventually, on May 15, 1998, her vision for the Tarot Garden in Tuscany was opened to the public. Built on top of Etruscan ruins atop a coastal estate, these statues boast vibrant mosaics and appear as whimsical giant monsters. One of them being card III in the deck -the Sphinx-like Empress– so imposing that Niki herself resided inside for several months.
