About
A public cave that is one of the largest in the world.
Grotta Gigante, which literally means Giant Cave, matches its name in size. It has a cavity that spans 130 meters (427 feet) long, 65m (213 feet) high and 107m (351 feet) tall - a total of 600 thousand cubic meters. This makes it the largest natural cavity accessible to visitors without having to use speleological equipment and training. It was first explored in 1840 by A.F. Linder who was looking for the source of the River Timavo, and opened up for tourists by 1905 with walkways illuminated by thousands of candles. Since the 1950s electric lighting has been used for visitors' safety while later on in the 70s new walkways were built.
