About

The renowned Basilica of San Domenico, also known as Basilica di San Domenico, is a magnificent church in Bologna filled with rich artistic history.

It was built by the Dominican Friars to serve as a resting place for the remains of its founder, San Domenico di Guzman, who arrived in Bologna in 1200. The interior houses priceless artworks created by esteemed artists like Guercino, Filippino Lippi and Ludovico Carracci. One of the highlights is the Chapel of San Domenico, featuring an ark adorned with sculptures by Michelangelo, Nicola Pisano and Alfonso Lombardi. The pinnacle is crowned by a marble cornice, crafted in 1469-73 by Niccolò da Puglia who is also responsible for the moving piece "Lamentation over the Dead Christ" displayed at Santa Maria della Vita. Noteworthy is also the remarkable wooden choir created by Fra’ Damiano da Bergamo during the Renaissance period, described by contemporaries as the eighth wonder of the world and even admired by emperor Carlo V. Adjacent to the church stands a Gothic-style bell tower, constructed in 1313 and towering at 51 metres.
