About

The Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi, also known as the Basilica di San Francesco d'Assisi in Italian and Basilica Sancti Francisci Assisiensis in Latin, is a significant church for the Roman Catholic Order of Friars Minor Conventual.

Located in the town of Assisi in central Italy's Umbria region, it holds great significance as the birth and resting place of Saint Francis. Designated as a papal minor basilica, it is a popular destination for Christian pilgrims visiting Italy. Adjacent to the basilica is Sacro Convento, which serves as a friary. This well-known landmark is easily recognizable to those approaching Assisi. In 2000, it was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Construction on this hillside basilica began in 1228 and consists of two churches: an Upper Church and a Lower Church, as well as a crypt where Saint Francis' remains are entombed. The Upper Church's interior showcases exceptional Gothic architecture, making it an important early example in Italy. Both the Upper and Lower Churches boast stunning frescoes by renowned late medieval painters from the Roman and Tuscan schools.
