The course at Country Club Castelgandolfo is laid out inside the remnants of an old volcanic crater, and it is located adjacent to the Pope's summer palace close to the capital. The layout was built by Robert Trent Jones Sr. in two stages, with the first nine holes debuting in 1987 and the second nine holes following a year later.
